Features of asbestos-cement pipes
Asbestos-cement pipes are the most popular type, due to the previously described characteristics. But it is important to note that from the point of view of operational safety, they are still inferior to chrysolite-cement ones. Otherwise, the additional advantages are obvious:
- The service life of such pipes is more than 50 years.
- High level of heat resistance. The material can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius without deformation or cracks.
- Low hygroscopicity. This suggests that the products can be used in soils with high humidity.
- There are no “metal problems”, namely: this type of pipe is not subject to corrosion.
- Sufficient smoothness on the inside and abrasion resistance on the outside. This makes the pipes ideal for sewerage.
- They are harmless in operation. The only downside is the dust during processing. However, there is no harm when using protective equipment. And once they are in the ground and performing their functions, they are absolutely safe.

Installation
Neither one nor the second type of pipe can be made by hand. You don't even need to try. But you can do the installation yourself quite quickly and efficiently. This is largely possible due to the unpretentiousness of the material. For example, you can cut a pipe with a regular hacksaw and join it without using a welding machine or other similar equipment. For this you can use asbestos-cement or polyethylene couplings. From the inside, they are equipped with special sealing rings, which guarantees the proper level of tightness. By the way, if previously cross and rotary adapters were made of cast iron and, accordingly, were expensive, now they are being replaced by plastic analogues that are not inferior in quality.

Chrysotile cement
Chrysotile cement pipe BNT has various characteristics. It all depends on the use of this type. This type of pipe was developed several decades ago. In fact, chrysotile is a type of asbestos. The difference in the types of this material lies rather in the environmental component. For example, amphibole asbestos is more harmful than chrysotile. What exactly?
Scientists call it carcinogenic, that is, it is poorly excreted from the body or not excreted at all. When laying a pipeline, it is impossible to do without cutting pipes. Materials of this type leave significant dust when cutting, which is harmful to the body. You can work with this type of pipe either in special respirators or without any treatment, which is practically impossible in most cases.
That is why now all production is set up only for chrysotile material. Nowadays it is impossible to find harmful amphibole pipes; they are simply not produced.
An indicator of the properties of a pipe is a numerical addition in the marking. For example, chrysotile cement pipe BNT 100 is the initial type, which is used for pipeline systems with light loads. The wall thickness of such a pipe is 9 mm, and, say, GOST for BNT 239 pipes also indicates the places of their application. Pipe BNT 150 and above is the most universal and can be used at any scale of the system.
