Corrugated stainless steel pipes (CSST - Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing) are a flexible material designed for organizing the supply of natural gas (propane) to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. CSST technology is relatively new, but is quickly catching on in the gas pipe market due to its ease of use. Such gas pipes have a number of advantages in terms of durability and practicality when compared with traditional steel pipelines.
Flexible Stainless Steel Pipe
This article is not an advertisement and is for informational purposes only!
Corrugated stainless steel pipe is an innovative type of engineering plumbing that has already earned popularity in the domestic market.
This technology was developed at the end of the previous century in Japan, a technology leader in many industries, then corrugated stainless steel pipe was tested and produced in South Korea (Cofulso), Germany and other developed countries. These pipes have proven themselves to be excellent, showing a number of advantages over cold-rolled steel, polypropylene and metal-plastic pipes.
Corrugated stainless steel pipes "Cofulso" with a wall thickness of up to 0.25 to 0.3 millimeters and a diameter of 15-32 millimeters are produced at enterprises in South Korea; they are flexible and durable; depending on the diameter, the bend can range from 30 to 150 millimeters.
The highest quality of products is confirmed in Russia by certification documents, and the easy installation of pipeline structures, reliability and durability have received the highest ratings from consumers in our country.
When installing pipelines from stainless corrugated pipes, classic brass fittings of various diameters and configurations are used, which allow you to reliably connect individual sections of the system to each other. This type of pipe is used for transporting gas, water, connecting to heating systems and even to old classic engineering structures. It is best to choose fittings from those manufacturers who specialize in their manufacture.
Area of use
Corrugated pipes made of stainless steel or others are successfully used in the repair and installation of pipeline systems in the housing and communal services sector, in private construction and in industrial premises. Most often they are used in systems with small pipe lengths and diameters.
For example, in heating systems, including the now extremely popular “warm” floor, for cold and hot water supply, fire extinguishing, gas distribution, electrical wiring and air conditioning.
The rubber flexibility and steel strength of the pipes allow them to be used in chemical, medical, agricultural, and food production.
Unlike plastic products, corrugated pipes do not change their properties and diameter during transportation and compression.
These pipe systems are widely used in the construction of residential apartment buildings.
Installing a standard system in cramped conditions in some areas of city apartments regularly causes problems, which is why the heating system has to be redone several times, the distribution diagram of electrical wiring, water, and gas has to be changed because of a couple of extra or missing centimeters of the product.
Corrugated stainless steel pipe has excellent flexibility and a pleasant appearance, and installation of a structure using it is extremely simple: you don’t have to plaster or hammer the walls, so installing systems of any complexity in the kitchen, boiler room, toilet, bathroom and other rooms using this type pipes is carried out using only a pair of wrenches.
Advantages of the stainless corrugated system
Corrugated pipes "Cofulso", made of stainless steel, as well as fittings for them, can last for many years, and the structure made from these products is very reliable and bends easily without the use of additional tools, while it does not change the cross-sectional diameter and does not form microcracks material and mechanical stress. This type of pipe is very elastic, it is not afraid of freezing in winter, mold, water hammer, rodents and fungi. The corrugated technology of the product compensates for compression and expansion under the influence of the temperature of the transported substance and the outside air.
A system for distributing drinking water using corrugated stainless pipes can be used without special cleaning of the liquid, and a pipeline with polishing from the inside does not accumulate lime deposits in heating and water supply structures.
The universal appearance of the pipes can fit into any interior of a living space. Installation of a piping system made of corrugated stainless steel pipes is quick and easy, even in hard-to-reach areas of the premises, and the fittings are securely installed in a few minutes.
The plumbing structure can be covered with concrete screeds, plaster and grooves, hidden behind protective or decorative panels, they are so durable and reliable. In addition, the corrugated product can be cut manually using an angle grinder, a hacksaw or a pipe cutter for thin-walled copper and steel pipes.
Production technology
Corrugated stainless steel pipe is made of steel that is resistant to corrosion. This is achieved due to the small content of chromium, nickel and carbon in the product, which also adds to the durability of the pipe.
The production uses a system for forming steel strips from stainless steel and automatically welding them. The quality of the seams is also checked automatically using a laser. Then heat treatment occurs to impart flexibility and form corrugation.
At the final stage of pipe manufacturing, the presence of invisible metal cracks under pressure in a liquid medium is checked.
Selection Instructions
The reliability of the pipeline system and high-quality installation depend on the implementation of several simple rules for purchasing products:
- Fittings must be complete;
- Before purchasing, the pipe must be inspected for mechanical damage and creases; it must be strong and flexible;
- When installing, you must follow the instructions, and after installation, check the system under pressure.
Installation of pipeline with corrugated pipes
On the construction market you can find a wide selection of corrugated pipes of various diameters, which allows you to install them both in large houses and in an ordinary apartment. The installation process of the structure is not difficult. All parts of the system are fastened together with brass fittings, which have a simple but reliable design.
In many respects, the technology for installing a corrugated pipe is similar to installing a metal-plastic pipe using compression fittings. However, even in comparison with this material it looks simpler.
The only thing that should guide you when choosing corrugated stainless pipes from Cofulso or any other company is that the fittings must be purchased from manufacturers recommended by the pipe manufacturer. An attempt to save a little money by installing fittings from an unknown company will not be successful, because this can lead to an emergency situation when operating the pipeline system.
Now we will talk about the system installation technology:
- Fittings are connected to equipment (taps, mixers) and other plumbing fixtures using classic polymer or rubber gaskets, which are usually included in the delivery package. Before installing them, you should make sure that the union nut on the side of the corrugated pipe connection is not tightened.
- Then, if necessary, you can cut the pipes with any tool at hand, but it is best to do this using a special roller pipe cutter. Don't forget to check the edge of the product, it should be smooth and free of burrs (remove them if there are any).
- Insert the pipe into the fittings and tighten the union nut.
- Afterwards, you can give the pipeline the required shape and attach it to the surface using special elements.
- After the installation process is completed, water is supplied to the system and the operation of the structure is checked under pressure. If a leak is detected, tighten the union nuts of the fittings.
Selecting a chimney
Pipe material
The service life and strength depend on the material. Therefore, it is worth relying on this indicator. The use of materials is regulated by building codes and regulations - GOST.
Corrugation
It is better to use corrugation after consultation with an inspector. At the legislative level, corrugated chimney pipes are not prohibited. But sometimes the inspection may require replacing it with galvanized or steel.
The main ones used for chimneys are:
- Stainless steel. Option for apartments and private houses. Stainless steel is neutral. Does not interact with moisture, acids and alkalis. Feels comfortable at temperatures up to 900 degrees Celsius. The gas outlet is flexible and can be installed in any direction. The wall thickness is up to 1 millimeter and it is better to take stainless steel.
- Aluminum. Formally, aluminum and its alloys can be used for geysers, since its operating temperature is up to 500 degrees Celsius. But, it can burn out, which will cause carbon monoxide to return to the apartment. In this case, the slightest etching will cause deterioration in health.
- Galvanization. Operating temperature – up to 600 degrees. This already allows them to be used with low and high temperature speakers. Zinc coating is highly sensitive to damage and acids. In case of minor damage, corrosion will be irreversible.
Consultation with an expert is advisable, because in a number of regions of the Russian Federation, only galvanized and steel straight pipes are allowed to be connected. Corrugation may be prohibited due to climatic conditions. Read the instructions for the column. It specifies acceptable materials and types of chimneys. If corrugated gas outlets are prohibited, it is better not to risk it.
Coaxial ducts
A gas water heater with a coaxial chimney is permitted by SNiP requirements. They are necessary in water heaters with active oxygen supply
A coaxial pipe is a two-section cavity. The internal part is designed to remove combustion waste that is harmful to health. From the outside there is an active intake of air for combustion.
There are varieties:
- Plastic. The material is convenient because it weighs little and is easy to install. Has convenient mounting locations. Used only in low-temperature speakers, as the plastic is short-lived and can melt. Does not suffer mechanical damage, but is resistant to alkaline and acidic environments. Moisture doesn't harm it at all.
- Stainless steel. Steel is resistant to temperatures, acids, humidity and mechanical stress. There are insulated and non-insulated models. If you live in a cold region, you need the first one. During cooling and heating, the uninsulated pipe makes a loud clicking sound. In addition, she may be led. Has several types of connection:
- Vertical. Relevant in apartment buildings where it is not possible to install a horizontal installation.
- Horizontal. The classic method for multi-storey and private houses.
Stainless steel
If the rules prohibit corrugation for hood 120, it is possible to use a solid stainless gas vent. Neutral to condensate with soot and water. It is not afraid of impacts and is easy to clean. The properties are maintained up to a temperature of 900 degrees, so it can be used for high-temperature columns.

Corrugated pipes for gas – Pipes and plumbing
If you have a gas main connected to your house, then it is more advisable to heat the water using gas. Often such heating devices are gas instantaneous water heaters. Out of habit, they are called geysers, by analogy with the devices that were installed in houses in the Soviet Union back in the late 50s.
In any household appliance that uses gas in its operation, it is necessary to get rid of its combustion products. For example, for gas water heaters, such an outlet is a pipe connecting the device to the ventilation shaft.
Advantages and disadvantages
Having taken a closer look at geysers and having studied all the advantages and disadvantages of corrugated pipes, we can conclude that the undoubted advantages are:
- Flexibility of the pipe itself. It can be laid to bypass all supporting structures that interfere with direct passage. It is possible to lay a pipe with any bend, at different angles.
- Relatively easy to install. This means that there is no need to attract specialists, and there is no need for specialized components. Be it adapters or docking units. The connection occurs using special adapters.
And with all these advantages – a relatively low price.
Of course, not everything is so perfect, and along with significant advantages, there are also disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is the relatively short service life when compared with the lifespan of chimneys made from rigid pipes.
Another disadvantage is the need to additionally insulate the chimney itself to avoid condensation.
The possibility of external and internal installation is also important.
Today there are many types of corrugated pipes on sale. Not every one can be used as a chimney. This is due to fire safety requirements and environmental standards. The following types of pipes are most often used.
Installation principles
The installation procedure is simple. After placing and securing the device body to the wall, a corrugation is put on the outlet pipe (it is located on top). The connection is secured with a clamp. To reduce noise levels, the structure is stretched as much as possible. The free end is inserted into the chimney hole and fixed.
It is important to distribute the corrugation evenly to avoid sagging. It delays the removal of carbon monoxide.
Make sure that the pipe does not come into contact with electrical wiring and other communications. When venting to the street, be sure to use thermal insulation to avoid condensation accumulation.
The operations described above are suitable for techniques with an open combustion chamber when the house has a chimney. If it is not there, then a hole is made in the wall and a coaxial outlet is installed. This is typical for devices with a closed chamber.
As you can see, the selection and installation of the outlet channel must be approached responsibly. Your safety and the efficiency of your equipment depend on this. It may be better to entrust the arrangement to professionals, then you won’t have to worry about the quality of the work done.
