Home Equipment Pipe cutters

Here you will find information about pipe cutters.

Below, see the list of site entries on this topic, and below the list is useful information about this tool and equipment.

Pipes are present in many designs with different purposes. Therefore, the range of standard sizes and materials from which they are made is very large. For this reason, the tools required for pipe processing are varied . Here is information about all types of pipe cutters used in working with various pipes.

Device and principle of operation

Pipe cutting equipment must provide the required pipe length while maintaining a smooth cutting surface . The cutting tools that meet these requirements are usually made in the form of rollers, cutters (cutters) and disks . A housing has been designed to accommodate it , allowing the instrument to fulfill its role. The dimensions of the housing correspond to the standard sizes of the pipes being processed and contain elements for basing the workpieces . The cutting tool is fed by special mechanisms built into the housing design.

There are the following principles of operation of pipe cutters.

  • The pipe is stationary and the cutting elements of the device rotate around it. This is usually how pipes on fixed pipelines are cut.
  • Here the device itself is stationary . A separate special drive makes the pipe rotate. Typically, this principle of operation is typical when processing large diameter pipes.

Stainless Steel Slitting Equipment

Stainless Steel Slitting Equipment

Slitting stainless steel is best done on a machine. Structurally, it is equipped with two synchronized shafts and a work table with adjustable guides. Double-sided knives are mounted on the shafts with thrust screws. The metal roll is fixed on a loading trolley, which moves along special guides and is then fixed on the unwinding drum. After this, the edges of the metal are trimmed with transverse scissors, and then individual strips are cut with circular knives.

The advantage of the technology is smooth cuts and the absence of burrs in the cutting areas. If the technologies and cutting rules are followed, the finished products will be of high quality and will not require additional processing. This technique of longitudinal cutting of stainless steel is used to produce strips for pipes.

Structurally, the equipment includes a table and specially shaped circular knives that perform longitudinal cutting of stainless steel. Precision processing is achieved through guides that feed the metal and ensure cuts in the right places. The equipment can be mechanical or electromechanical; its type does not affect the quality of processing, but it does affect the cost of the finished product.

Areas of application

The pipe cutter finds application both in everyday life in the form of simple devices, and in other various spheres of life as a unit with a mechanized drive.

The use of plastic pipes in apartments increases the demand for household pipe cutters among ordinary users. Among other places of application of the device for cutting pipes, we will highlight only some of the main ones :

  • construction of buildings and structures;
  • equipment and repair of utility networks (water supply, sewerage, heating, oil and gas pipelines and others);
  • installation and repair of pipes in shipbuilding;
  • non-ferrous metal pipes in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Miter cutting

In this case, we will tell you how to cut a pipe at an angle of 45º. Marking will be needed in this case too (more details: “How to cut a pipe at an angle - marking options for round and profile pipes”).

To apply it you will need a square sheet of paper that needs to be folded diagonally. The resulting triangle is wrapped around the pipe and fixed. This will create an angle of 45º.

You can, of course, try to lower the pipes at the desired slope into the water, then the boundary of the wet surface will serve as a marking. However, it is best to use a special device for corner cutting - a miter box.

how to cut a pipe straight

The shape of the miter box looks like an inverted letter “P”. Ready-made holes with different angles have already been made in its opposite walls. It is enough just to place the pipe inside the device and cut it by running a hacksaw along the selected grooves.

Results

Thus, making an even cut of a pipe from any material yourself is quite simple. There are only a few tricks in this matter that will allow you to quickly and efficiently carry out all the work and build yourself the necessary object for your household or dacha. We also note that it is better to check the measurements several times before starting cutting, because you can accidentally make a mistake and ruin the material, incurring additional financial losses.

GOST standards

The variety of different design options creates difficulties for creating typical chains of pipe cutters united by a single standard. The purpose and technical characteristics are left to the manufacturers so as not to limit the device’s innovative development.

The only type of pipe cutters for which GOST exists are cumulative ones . All of them are single-use and use strictly regulated explosives. GOST R 55784 – 2013 is an important document, the implementation of which guarantees the reliable operation of cumulative pipe cutters.

Kinds

certain criteria for division by type . They can be designed for cutting a specific pipe material, differ in the type of drive, design of the cutting tool, and mobility when performing work.

For metal, steel, stainless and other types of pipes

Pipes are made from various types of materials that have certain strength, plastic and other mechanical characteristics. It is almost impossible to make a universal pipe cutter for all types and sizes of materials .

The manufacturer strives to cover the maximum range of processed pipes , but a certain direction by type of material is still present.

Stationary machines and portable tools

Stationary cutting devices are installed in industrial areas . The efficiency of their use depends on the equipment load; it should be as high as possible.

Portable pipe cutters are used in a mobile version . To achieve this, they are subject to increased requirements for minimum weight and dimensional characteristics . The design of some types of pipe cutters, for example, detachable ones, makes it possible to transport them for work in the field.

By drive type

Based on the type of drive, the following types are distinguished: manual, electric, hydraulic, pneumatic .

  • Manual pipe cutters are used mainly in everyday life. The work is performed through the use of physical force and it is difficult to do a large amount of work at once. However, for occasional work at home, this is a good option.

  • An electric pipe cutter is suitable for time-consuming work. A prerequisite is the presence of an electrical network. The option with a power source in the form of a battery makes it possible to work without the presence of a mains power supply and increases the mobility of the pipe cutter. Some discomfort is caused by noise during operation.

  • A pneumatic pipe cutter uses the power of compressed air to operate. Air under pressure is pumped into the receiver by a compressor, which at the required moment sets the mechanisms of the device in motion.

  • A hydraulic pipe cutter operates using a piston pump that creates pressure with hydraulic fluid. High pressure makes it possible to obtain a device with increased power characteristics. However, in terms of performance, this pipe cutter is inferior to an electric device.

Russian and foreign production

Foreign manufacturers of pipe cutting tools are significantly superior to Russian ones in the range of products they produce. There are reasons for this - they have a long history of developing their production.

The Russian segment of this market began to form only recently, where TECHNOMASHHOLDING and some others began to appear.

The majority of foreign companies have official representatives on the Russian market. Among them, the world famous American, REED, German, EXACT, REMS, French VIRAX , Taiwanese JONNESWAY and others stand out.

Material, weight, size

The pipe cutter body must be durable and have a rigid structure . Manual ones should also have good ergonomics and be light in weight. Therefore, well-known companies make the case from light and durable alloys .

Portable pipe cutters are subject to the same requirements as for body materials. At the same time, the device must have a compact design for ease of transportation and the ability to work in cramped conditions.

Stationary pipe cutters do not have any special restrictions in terms of special materials, weight and dimensional characteristics.

Electric pipe cutters

For large volumes of this kind of work, it is advisable to use a tool with an external drive, although their price is noticeably higher. Electric pipe cutters are especially convenient (if there is a stationary AC network).

A typical design of an electrically driven pipe cutter for cutting ductile steel includes:

  1. Impact-resistant housing equipped with ventilation slots.
  2. Drive high-speed electric motor designed for voltage 220 V.
  3. Three thrust rollers provide the necessary cutting accuracy.
  4. A cutting cutter fixed in a tool holder on the motor shaft and protected from the thrust zone.
  5. Reduction gear.

working with an electric pipe cutter

The weight of electric pipe cutters does not exceed 1.5 kg, however, many designs provide for attaching the tool to a mechanic’s workbench. No lubrication of the working area is required during cutting. The design of electric pipe cutters for cutting stronger rolled metal is characterized by the absence of a gearbox, and therefore the speed of the cutting tool reaches 3000...4000 per minute. In such conditions, supply of lubricant to the separation zone is mandatory. The working tool is made of hard alloy grades VK5 or VK8, and the disk itself is covered with a removable casing.

The design of a hydraulic pipe cutter includes a working cylinder, a rod and a piston, and the necessary pressure is created by a compact hydraulic pump, which is included in the package. The stroke of the cutter is regulated by changing the pressure of the working fluid - water. Hydraulic pipe cutters can be used in any conditions, but they are inferior in power to electrically driven models.

How to cut, how to use the tool

A certain sequence of actions is important when using a manual pipe cutter . With the mechanized method, you only need to correctly align the pipe cutter relative to the cut markings.

Working with a roller device requires a longer time when cutting pipes. After each tightening of the clamping device, you should walk the roller around the perimeter of the cut more than once. The clamping force should be commensurate with the force applied by the operator.

Important: increasing the clamping force will lead to rapid wear of the roller.

When working with a disc cutter, the depth of cut can be completed in one go and the pipe can be further cut in one pass. When cutting large diameter pipes on some stationary installations, the pipe rotates relative to the cutting tool.

Pipe cutter for steel pipes - DIY production

Although a budget hand-held pipe cutter for Chinese-made steel pipes can be purchased for around 1,000 rubles, sometimes for economic purposes it makes sense to make such a device yourself if you have the appropriate tools.

To make a pipe cutter, you definitely need a welding machine, a grinder for cutting metal parts, a drill or a hammer drill with a metal drill. The parts you will need are a short piece of profile pipe, a piece of a motorcycle (bicycle) chain, a roller cutter for a pipe cutter, two small metal plates, a bolt and a bushing to match its size.

Rules of operation and care

Rules for care and use are specified in the instructions that are included with its purchase. For users who have no experience with such a device, you should carefully study the instructions. In addition to other recommendations contained in the instructions, the following must be strictly followed .

  • The cutting tool of the device must always be sharpened. Working with a blunt tool will lead to its rapid breakdown, which may also affect the performance of other parts of the structure.
  • Regularly lubricate the rotating parts of the pipe cutter, as well as the clamping device, to ensure smooth operation.
  • Clean the device immediately after use.
  • Monitor the integrity of the power cord and socket of the electric pipe cutter. The button should work fine. The electrical device must not be overloaded.

Compliance with the rules for care and operation will make the pipe cutter work without wasting time on repairs.

Alternative cutting tools

Cutting pipes using pipe cutters is far from the only way to do this. The most common mechanized ones are :

  • cutting with a grinder;
  • cutting with circular saws;
  • use of band saws;
  • processing of pipes on lathes.

Thermal effect on the pipe wall is also widely used for cutting pipes:

  • using a gas flame burner;
  • use of laser beam energy;
  • plasma cutting with a jet of ionized gas.

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Threading tool

Using a thread-cutting tool, external and internal threads are created on cylindrical surfaces. Taps are used to cut internal threads. A tool called a pipe clamp is used to cut external threads on pipes. On solid cylindrical workpieces (bolts, studs), threads are cut using so-called dies. The necessary tool is selected according to the type of thread, and taps are also selected according to the type of hole (blind, through).
